Transitions to contrast items are all the words which are used to present an idea that is opposite to the previous one. There are many words that indicate contrast but let’s see only some of them.

Examples:
a.This pineapple jam is tart. In contrast, this orange jam is sweet.
b.That melon is delicious. On the contrary, this pear is tasteless.
c. Although crime is increasing, corruption is decreasing in public institutions.
d. Scientists are inventive. However, factory workers aren’t very creative.

Other Examples:
a. Even though my half – brother drinks two glasses of orange juice a day, he is suffering from a vitamin C deficiency.
b. He got a job in spite of his prison
record.
He got a job in spite of the fact that
he had a prison record.
c. John’s company is doing extremely well despite the recession.
John’s company is doing extremely well despite
of the fact that the coun
try is going through the recession.

Note:
We usually use “despite” and “in spite of” with a noun, but we have to use the
expression “despite of the
fact that” or “in spite of the fact that” when we introduce a full sentence.
