Why we smile
A broad, (1)
smile is a wonderful thing, but not something we can produce to order. When we force a smile for a photo, it can look like an anxious (2) , and with good reason. It's thought the smile evolved from the (3) seen in primates today, with the corners of the mouth pulled back. This shows submission to a hostile fellow primate, signalling I am afraid of you - I am not a threat. In humans, this evolved into the smile, making others feel at ease. Achieving a good (4) isn't easy; we can control the muscles around the mouth, but those of the eyes, wich give a smile its warmth. This fake, (5) smile can easily become a grin or (6) , sending the wrong message entirely.
