Note: Not all the words that end in –ly are adverbs of manner, they can be adjectives.

Examples: friendly, lonely, lovely, etc.
- Amelia has cried all night. She feels lonely.
- John and Karen were holding hands at the park; it was lovely.

We can use adverbs of manner with comparative structures as. “Nearly as…as”, “Almost as…as”
a. Freshmen don’t write essays nearly as perfectly as sophomores do.
b. Juniors protest against the new university laws almost as passionately as seniors do.

1. Complete and read the teacher’s instructions and complete with an adjective from the box. Change it into an adverb of manner first.

Before the exam 

a. Check the exam timetable . Make sure you know where and when all your exams are. 

b. , you are required to answer questions using only a pencil. 

c. Arrive at least 15 minutes  before the exam starts. 

In the Exam Hall 

d. As you enter, show your Student ID card

e. Ask the teacher to repeat the instructions

f. You are not permitted to share dictionaries or any other material work

g. Everything you write must be in the answer booklet

h. Stop writing  when the teacher says the exam is over. Leave the exam hall  and . Remember to take your belongings with you.
