In English, we describe how an action is done by using adverbs of manner. They usually come after the main verb.

Example:


a. Gisela drives her car carefully.
     “Carefully” describes the way she drives her car.
 b. The athlete celebrated his triumph enthusiastically.
     “Enthusiastically” describes the way the athlete celebrated his triumph.

An adverb of manner is the result of an adjective + “–ly”.

  Regular adverbs

Case 1: In general, to make an adverb of manner, we just add –ly at the end of an adjective.
a. Successful – Successfully 
b. Effective – Effectively 
c. Clear – Clearly

Case 2: When the adjective ends in –y, omit “y” and add –ily 
a. Happy – Happily 
b. Heavy – Heavily 
c. Noisy – Noisily

Case 3: When the adjective ends in –e, add –ly 
a. Safe – Safely
b. Inquisitive – Inquisitively
c. Close – Closely 

Irregular adverbs of manner: They have the same form as the adjective of manner.
a. Hard – Hard
b. Early – Early
c. Fast – Fast
d. *Good – Well (it is an exception)
