When you want to recommend something to a person, we use the modal “should” to express our advice or suggestion.

Affirmative form

a. They should study for the exam to pass the course.
b. He should practice English every day to be more fluent.

Negative form

a. They shouldn’t lose their time because they need to study.
b. He shouldn’t feel nervous when he speaks in English.

Note: should not = shouldn’t

Interrogative form

a. Should they study for the exam to pass the course?
Yes, they should.

b. Should they lose their time?
No, they shouldn’t.

c. Should he practice English every day to be more fluent?
Yes, he should.

d. Should he feel nervous when he speaks in English?
No, he shouldn’t.

Also, we use the auxiliary “had better” to express some advice. It is used in affirmative and negative forms.

Affirmative form

Examples:

a. You had better study for the exam.
b. He had better practice with his teacher.
c. We had better help him to study.

Important: Use “had better” with all the pronouns.
